MOLD EXTERMINATION

Filamentous mold is a single type of fungus that is different from plants, animals and bacteria. Molds are decomposers of dead organic matter such as leaves, wood and plants and can sometimes infect living plants, animals and house structures. The spores and hair-like filaments of individual mold colonies, called hyphae, are too small to be seen without a microscope, but when mold colonies multiply rapidly on surfaces, black or green mold is usually visible.

Its colour is also influenced by the source of the material and the age of the colony – the initial stage of the mold resembles white fuzz which darkens over time and penetrates deeper into the material. If mold grows behind the vinyl wallpaper, colourful pink or purple stains may appear. Mold can begin to grow indoors when spores settle on damp surfaces and there is not enough fresh air flow to regularly replace the stale air in the room. There are many types of molds, but each requires moisture. We carry out mold removal in Vilnius and Kaunas.

WHAT CONDITIONS ARE NEEDED FOR MOLD TO GROW INDOORS?

Mold needs a moist environment to grow, as well as nutrients, oxygen and temperatures ranging from 4.4 °C to 37.7 °C. The preferred relative humidity is 80%. As mold breaks down dead organic matter, it can grow on wood, paper, plasterboard, cement, concrete and other surfaces. Eradication of mold is mandatory as it multiplies in order to protect yourself and your health.

This fungus can digest some synthetic materials such as adhesives, building pastes and paints. Although the mold cannot obtain nutrients from inorganic materials such as concrete, glass and metal, it can grow on the dirt on these surfaces, the growth of which allows the mold to penetrate deeply and damage the structure, and to poison the air continuously.

HOW DOES MOLD REPRODUCE?

The mold grows by expanding its hyphae, which resemble tiny root hairs. In this way, a small colony can expand to cover a very large surface area. Molds also have spores which can survive in a wide range of conditions. When spores are released into the environment, they can be transported by air or water to new sites for germination, and some are so small that they are influenced by air currents rather than the gravity of the ground. Once the spores have landed on a moist surface with the right materials, temperature and oxygen, they will germinate rapidly enough. These spores are ubiquitous in both outdoor and indoor air – unless special measures are taken to remove them.

Wherever there is organic material from tools (leaves, mulch, wood and its products) there are molds and their spores. Every day we are exposed to these airborne mold spores, sometimes in high concentrations. Mold is practically everywhere, but what can be done is to control its proliferation indoors, especially for those with hay fever or other allergies caused by even small concentrations of spores in the air. Effective mold control will help to protect your living or other spaces.

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH EFFECTS OF MOLD?

Mold can cause an allergic reaction in a significant number of people, but the severity of the reaction varies depending on the concentration of spores and the sensitivity of the body. If a person has asthma, mold in the environment can trigger an attack or worsen a chronic form of asthma. People with weakened immune systems, AIDS, certain types of cancer, or heart and kidney problems, and those who take certain medications, are much more susceptible to fungal infections and many of these fungi grow in damp buildings. Therefore, mold remediation is a very important procedure, so don’t give it a miss and successfully remove mold from your home.

Molds sometimes produce powerful chemicals called mycotoxins, one of which is toxic black mold. This, like other molds, produces toxic mycotoxins and thus reduces the growth of other molds and bacteria in the surrounding environment. Penicillin is one of the mycotoxins used in medicine, in the production of antibiotics to remove certain harmful bacteria from the body, but other mycotoxins are not so friendly to humans. Some of them cause allergic reactions when inhaled or touched, and they also slowly poison the intestines and other digestive organs when ingested (spores and toxins are deposited on various surfaces, including food). Allergic reactions include symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, red eyes and skin rashes (dermatitis). They may occur immediately or only after a while.

HOW TO GET RID OF MOLD IN YOUR HOME?

These days, it is possible to completely eliminate mold and mold spores indoors with special equipment and cleaning products. Its growth can be stopped by controlling indoor humidity and fresh air flow. If mold grows in the home, it is essential to clean it up after cleaning the cause, otherwise the problem will recur after a while. Tips and techniques to help control the growth of mold in living spaces:

  • If mold has appeared or reappeared in your shower, poor ventilation is most likely the main cause. This can be remedied by checking the fan draft or by leaving windows open more often, and it is advisable to clean the bathroom more often than other rooms in the flat or house, as this is often the source of mold spores;
  • Fix the drainage system as soon as possible and dry all items in the bathroom;
  • Clean hard surfaces with an alkaline detergent, and you can leave an additional electric heated dryer on to dry them, or in the worst case use a hairdryer;
  • Absorbent or porous materials such as carpets, clothes, tablecloths or curtains are usually permanently affected by mold and have to be discarded, but if there is not much mold visually, it is possible to try dipping the fabrics in a solution of chlorine bleach;
  • Do not putty or paint surfaces affected by mold. It must first be destroyed and the affected area must be dried. If the mold is not destroyed, it may otherwise expand and destroy the putty and paint after a while;
  • If you are unsure about how to clean a particular surface, or if there is a lot of mold on a particular surface, it is advisable to turn to specialists who have the experience to destroy mold and mold growth on a wide range of materials much more quickly and efficiently;
  • Avoid smelling mold spores. Before you start cleaning the mold, buy a special raspirator, available in various hardware stores, and an assistant will help you choose the appropriate filters that trap harmful organic substances in your breath;
  • Wear gloves. Mittens with a length almost reaching the elbow are recommended. If you use strong disinfectants or biocides, gloves should be made of natural rubber, neoprene, nitrile, polyurethane or PVC. Avoid touching mold-damaged surfaces with bare hands, which can trigger allergies or spread millions of spores into the air that can easily settle on other surfaces;
  • Wear sealed glasses. It is recommended to choose a pair of clear goggles that will completely isolate the spores from entering the eye, and the volatility of the goggles can cause severe eye irritation when using strong preparations;
  • Keep the humidity low. If possible, keep indoor relative humidity at 60% (ideally between 30 and 50%). This can be measured by purchasing an inexpensive hygrometer (often integrated with a clock function);
  • If you see condensation accumulating on walls, objects or windows, dry it immediately and fix the cause. In the presence of condensation, mold can appear visually very quickly;
  • Reduce or eliminate the use of devices that humidify indoor air; if you don’t want to do so, relocate them to more ventilated rooms.
  • Remember that mold removal is not an easy procedure and is best left to the professionals.

10 FACTS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MOLD

  1. Mold causes allergic reactions, affects the respiratory and digestive systems, and harms people with sensitive immunity;
  2. Controlling indoor humidity (30-60%) is a reliable way to prevent mold;
  3. A plumbing fault is a good start for mold growth and must be addressed immediately;
  4. After mold removal with household products, damp surfaces should be dried within 24-48 hours;
  5. Severely damaged fabrics should be discarded, but you can try to eradicate mold growth in a chlorine bleach bath;
  6. Condensation is an excellent indicator of a suitable environment for mold formation. It should be removed as soon as possible from cold surfaces such as windows, pipes, external walls, roofs or floors, and additionally insulated with bonding materials or films;
  7. Do not place moisture absorbing and retaining materials, such as carpets, in areas where there is a persistent moisture problem;
  8. Mold fungi can be found practically anywhere, in any material containing moisture: wood, paper, porous fabrics, cement, concrete, tiles, etc.
  9. Mold must not be touched with bare hands, as this stirs up the spores, which are spread over a large area, and also causes an allergic reaction, which may occur immediately or after a while;
  10. In case of significant contamination in various areas of the room, it is recommended to contact specialists who, using proven materials and techniques, will solve the mold problem much more quickly and efficiently.

You may suspect ‘hidden’ mold if you smell dampness but cannot see the source, or if you know that the plumbing system has been damaged, walls and floors have been flooded, or residents report increased respiratory or digestive problems. Mold may be ‘hiding’ in places such as on the outside of the house, under wallpaper or panelling, on the upper side of ceiling tiles, under carpets in corners. Mold can also be found inside walls around pipes, behind furniture, inside ducts and in roof materials above (due to inadequate or poor insulation and condensation build-up). In the event of mold, we advise you to immediately contact professionals with effective and proven mold removal techniques and methods.
