WHAT ARE WOODWORMS?

Bark beetles are a group of insects belonging to the family Curculionidae and the subfamily Scolytinae. The name is derived from their habit of crawling under the bark of trees and plants, where they feed and lay eggs. They are found in many parts of the world and play a rather important ecological role, breaking down dead and dying trees.

But the role of this insect does not always serve our nature. Certain species of bark beetles are known as forest pests, which attack weakened or stressed trees, causing considerable damage by disrupting the flow of water and nutrients to the tree, causing it to decline or even die.

The life cycle of a bark beetle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult worm. The eggs are laid under the bark and the hatched larvae feed on the inner tissues of the bark, creating the winding tunnels.

WHY DID WOODWORMS APPEAR IN THE HOUSE?

An outbreak of bark beetles can be particularly worrying for owners of wooden houses, as these insects pose a serious threat to the structure of the house. But what influences the emergence of killer whales?

Drought: long periods of drought stress trees, and insufficient moisture weakens their natural defences, making them more vulnerable.

Temperature: bark beetles are more active and reproduce more rapidly during warm periods. Warmer winters also reduce the mortality rate of these beetles, which may increase the existing population.

Overcrowded forests: overcrowding can increase competition for resources, making trees more susceptible to stress and infestation. Good forest management practices, such as thinning, can help reduce this risk.

Weak trees: bark beetles usually attack trees that are weakened by disease, injury or age. These stressed trees give off chemical signals that attract the bark beetles.

High populations of bark beetles: although stressed trees are more vulnerable, healthy trees can also be infested if the beetle population is high and the environmental conditions are particularly favourable.

Wood used for construction: the susceptibility of wooden houses to bark beetle infestations may depend on the type of wood used for construction. Some species of woodworm prefer certain types of wood, so houses built with these trees may be more at risk.

Proximity to forests: houses located near forests or wooded areas may be more vulnerable to bark beetles, as these pests can easily move from nearby trees into the wooden structure.

HOW TO AVOID AN INFLUX OF WOODWORMS?

When building or renovating your home, choose wood that is naturally more resistant to bark beetles. Cedar, mahogany and cypress are less attractive to these pests because of their natural oils. Bark beetles like wood that is moist and freshly cut, so make sure it is properly dried.
In the same way, inspect the wood for cracks or other cracks, and seal these imperfections with appropriate means. Use protective coatings and finishes to protect your wooden home from these unwanted bugs.
Also, don’t forget to regularly inspect the wooden parts of the house – eaves, fascia boards and other wooden house structures. Look for signs of infestation, such as small exit holes, sawdust or decaying foliage on nearby trees.
Store firewood properly – away from your home and off the ground. Before bringing firewood inside, inspect it for infestations of bark beetles.
Prune and remove infested trees – if there are wormwood-infested trees on your property, consider pruning or removing them. Infested trees can be a source of beetles that can attack your home. At the same time, don’t forget the health of the surrounding trees, which will be more resistant to these pests if properly maintained.
If you have woodland near your home, consider reducing the density of trees by thinning them.
