The first steps in the fight against hornets start in spring. Check all the places where they used to nest to make sure they have not reappeared, as well as holes in the ground, cavities in cracks (such as a hole in the skirting of a house), behind cornices and other similar places. In spring, the nests are still small and there is nothing there during the day, so they can be removed.
Also, to prevent hornets from flying around their favourite outdoor spots, people plant plants that naturally repel them. These can include mint, chickweed, eucalyptus, thyme. Hornets have a strong dislike of peppermint, so people place cloths soaked in peppermint essential oil in places where hornets might start to hive. - If you are allergic to insect stings, you must carry a medical kit with you;
- Hornets are most attracted to yellow and white clothing, so if you are going outdoors, you should avoid wearing these colours;
- Do not walk barefoot on the grass, do not smell of strong perfumes, take care when eating scented foods that attract insects and when drinking sugary soft drinks and alcoholic beverages.
- Do not use repellents designed to repel mosquitoes, as they have no effect on hornets;
- If you see a hornets’ nest near your home, call a specialist, as you will not be able to eradicate them completely by yourself.
