The larvae live and develop into mosquitoes in water, and the egg stage lasts only a few days. The latter are laid in slow-moving or stagnant water. Females lay 100 or more eggs and the development cycle takes between one and two weeks. The optimum breeding temperature is 20-25o. Females can overwinter under favourable conditions, for example in cellars.
One of the main attractions of bloodsuckers is the smell of skin. Females use a weevil with a bristle for feeding and feed on the blood of mammals (humans, cattle, horses), while male weevils do not have such bristles and feed on plant juices and nectar. Blood is needed by mosquitoes because the proteins it contains are involved in egg formation. We eradicate mosquitoes in Vilnius and Kaunas districts.

To make the blood more fluid during suction, the female mosquito injects saliva into the subcutaneous layer, which activates the immune system, causing inflammation, which leads to itching and reddening of the bite site and the formation of a lump.
