BEDBUG EXTERMINATION

The main signs of bed bugs are small bites on the neck, arms, hands, legs and itching, and small spots of blood or bug droppings on bedding. This is the price you pay if you have bugs in your home. Bites and spots are easiest to spot in the morning as these pests feed at night.

It should be noted that some people may be more uncomfortable from a bed bug bite than from a mosquito bite, so if you have any doubts, it is advisable not to delay in contacting a doctor or specialist bug control service.

Bed bugs are often contracted on holiday in other countries, staying in hotels and resorts that are already infested, and they take up residence safely in suitcases and clothing and enter the home. Bugs can also be found in old furniture, donated clothes, mattresses, brought in from the outside, or they can be brought in from neighbours’ houses. Suspect you have bed bugs in your home? SIGNS THAT YOU HAVE BEDBUGS IN YOUR HOME

  • Restless sleep, vague biting sensations, localised skin rashes, lumps, redness and itching in the morning, reminiscent of a mosquito bite, but much milder. It is particularly common for such rashes resulting from bed bug bites to occur on softer areas of the skin – on the neck, the inside of the arms, etc., areas that are not covered by underwear or bedding.
  • Bloodstains are found on bedding, similar to those found when a bite bite has soiled a sheet or blanket: these are caused by bed bugs when bedding is pressed against them. Pressing the bug causes the blood to flow out, but the bug itself stays alive and moults, so you won’t see a dead bug on your bed.
  • Faeces. You can recognise bug droppings by the small brown or yellowish spots that remain on the bedding. If you notice similar spots, you may suspect that they were left by bugs.
  • One of the signs that you have bugs is a specific smell: it may not be very noticeable, but if you have a larger colony, you should be able to smell cognac, musk, cocktail, or the faint odour of unwashed socks.
  • Bug carcasses. However, to see them, you need to check your bed thoroughly (this is how you discover bed bugs), your carpets and furniture, and check cracks or areas that are not naturally lit.

Our team’s bed bug extermination service is perfect for you if you think you have bugs.

WHAT A BEDBUG BITE LOOKS LIKE

blakių įkandimai

Most people don’t feel the bite because the bug injects an anaesthetic at the time of the bite and is able to suck blood undisturbed for about ten minutes.

Bug bites are often confused with mosquito bites. One of the most striking differences is that when a bug bites, it leaves a series of pink spots on the body that are visible after nightfall. The bite is followed by a swollen sensation. Blood dots are visible not only on the body but also on bedding.

In some cases, allergic reactions have been reported in humans, but no serious health effects have been observed. The bites appear as a line on the skin or in a small area next to each other, for example on the arms or legs.

A single bug can bite more than once on the same area of skin if its feeding is disturbed. Bites found in several places on the body may indicate that you have been bitten by several bugs. Therefore, extermination of bugs is a mandatory procedure to protect your peace of mind.

HOW TO CONTROL BEDBUG AT HOME?

At night, the parasitic BUGS emerge from their hiding places and locate their prey by carbon dioxide and body heat exhaled by humans. A bedbug can suck twice as much blood from a person’s bedding as it weighs.

The female lays a total of 200 to 400 eggs per year during her 1.5 year life span, from which the nymphs hatch. They spawn 5 times and feed on blood before each spawning, until they mature into an adult bug. This process usually takes 30-40 days.

If bed bugs have been spotted in the home, eradication measures should be taken immediately, as longer delays will make eradication very difficult. It is common to hear of traditional home extermination methods that have been used in the past by people trying to protect themselves from bed bugs. Here are 3 of the most commonly heard extermination methods, but are all of them effective?

ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING

It is said that parasitic bugs are usually active in the dark, which is the most favourable time to feed (the only exception being very hungry bugs). Living in a brightly lit room causes them to weaken and starve to death as the light disrupts their natural rhythms. However, this is not true; in the presence of high levels of pollution, bugs can move from one end of the room to the other during the day in peace.

EXTERMINATION OF BUGS BY FROST

This is one of the oldest methods of bug control, dating back to the 19th century, when the whole family would go out for a few days to visit neighbours and leave the windows and doors open. Unfortunately, it’s not that simple, as bugs can tolerate temperatures as low as -40 degrees. It is also worth knowing that at low temperatures, bugs are able to suspend their life processes and “hibernate”, waiting for more favourable conditions. Thus, in the Lithuanian climate, you will not freeze bugs in flats or houses, but only temporarily decontaminate them.

HEAT TREATMENT

Metal structures harbouring bugs can be effectively treated with a heat-emitting machine, but the locations must be found and the treatment must be localised, which can be very time-consuming and costly.

Regular inspections of carpets, mattresses, sofas and armchairs are a good way of spotting settled pests – if you see lots of black dots and larvae hatching, and maybe even the bugs themselves, it’s time to take action.

Chemicals sold in shops are not 100% effective due to the number of competing companies, so most chemicals are diluted and not very effective. If you want to get rid of bugs, the most effective way is to seek professional help and carry out a complete disinfestation of the entire premises.

PREVENTION OF BEDBUG

Reddish-brown droppings, bug marks and pearly-white eggs are also signs that there are bugs in your home. However, a professional assessment is needed to make sure it is bugs, as people often confuse bugs with ticks, carpet beetles, fleas or lice. Sterilus.lt qualified specialists will give you a free telephone consultation and help you eradicate bugs at home quickly. Exterminating bugs is not an easy procedure, leave it to the professionals.

Here are simple steps you can take to reduce your chances of getting bugs:

  • Wash your clothes in water at the highest possible temperature.
  • Remove large and unnecessary furniture in your home that could harbour bugs.
  • Do not lend clothes, suitcases or furniture to friends or neighbours. Also, do not borrow from them.
  • Thoroughly tidy and clean your bedroom, especially the floor under and next to your bed.
  • Vacuuming your rooms can only remove bugs that are visible to the naked eye. This will not guarantee the eradication of pests. (Empty and clean vacuum bags should be used when vacuuming.)

When travelling:

  • Check the hotel’s bed linen and mattresses for bugs, blood stains and unpleasant smells.
  • Don’t put your suitcases on the bed.
  • Put your clothes in wardrobes instead of drawers.
  • Store your suitcases in the garage or attic between trips.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Stinging bug bites appear on the skin as a line or in a small area next to each other, for example on the arms or legs, usually after nightfall. Blood spots are visible not only on the body but also on bedding. Read more about bug bites here.

Wash your clothes in water at 60 degrees. Dispose of old, unused furniture and old clothes and items where you have found bugs. Keep your home tidy, clean the floor near and under furniture thoroughly, vacuum more often and clean all corners. Home extermination does not guarantee complete eradication of bugs.

The cost of bug control depends on the size of your home and the extent of the infestation. Contact us, tell us more about the situation and we will adjust the price.

Bugs are the most difficult pest to eradicate, so two visits are needed to eradicate bugs. The first visit kills the hatched bugs, but not their eggs, as they are not affected by chemistry. 10-14 days after the first visit, we come to eradicate the hatched eggs.
