DISINFECTION – EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
It’s much healthier to live or work in clean smelling rooms. In regularly cleaned and ventilated rooms, the level of micro-organisms in the environment is not harmful to human health. However, when the number of micro-organisms and infectious agents that cause infectious diseases or allergies in the environment increases, it is necessary to disinfect the premises, which is why disinfection is mandatory.
WHAT IS DISINFECTION?
Disinfection is the control of infectious agents that cause infectious diseases and allergic reactions in the environment by physical, chemical and biological means.
The aim of disinfection is to destroy or at least reduce the number of micro-organisms in the environment that cause infectious diseases and allergies, and can otherwise harm human health or property. Disinfection may include rooms, clothing and household articles, waste pits, latrines, sheds and other contaminated objects.
TYPES OF DISINFECTION
There are two types of disinfection: focal disinfection and preventive disinfection. Focal disinfection is carried out at the outbreak of an infectious disease and uses chemical disinfectants.
Preventive disinfection of premises is carried out before infectious diseases are detected and is carried out regularly. The most common preventive disinfection is carried out to decontaminate premises, transport, equipment, furniture, crockery, bedding and sanitary facilities.
In the event of an accident in the water supply or sewerage network, after the installation of a new manhole, after repairing a manhole, in emergency situations, in places where people congregate (in shopping, catering, medical and educational establishments, bathhouses, stations), on livestock farms, in livestock and raw materials processing plants, and in other facilities – in the event of an outbreak of infectious diseases.
DISINFECTION METHODS
There are four main disinfection methods, based on the disinfectants used: mechanical, physical, biological and chemical.
MECHANICAL DISINFECTION OF PREMISES
Mechanical disinfection can be carried out by each person independently, without the need for specialist intervention. Mechanical disinfection at home or at work is carried out by brushing with a brush or damp cloth, vacuuming with a vacuum cleaner equipped with a variety of fine particle filters (such as HEPA), washing with a stream of running water, and ventilating the room.
Flowers that release phytoncides (e.g. geraniums) and essential oils such as sage, eucalyptus, tea tree, etc., can also protect against the increase of microorganisms in the air. However, mechanical disinfection only reduces the number of micro-organisms in the environment. Therefore, other disinfection techniques used by pest control technicians are necessary to eradicate micro-organisms.
PHYSICAL AND BIOLOGICAL DISINFECTION
Physical disinfection involves destroying micro-organisms by physical means such as drying, heating, boiling, burning, irradiation, ultrasonic vibration, etc. Biological disinfection is used for the preventive disinfection of water by using living organisms.
CHEMICAL DISINFECTION
To stop the growth and multiplication of unwanted micro-organisms, or to eliminate them altogether, pest control technicians carry out chemical disinfection using chemical disinfectants – disinfectants.
Chemicals and their preparations are poisonous substances and must be used with care and in accordance with health and safety regulations. Disinfectants are designed to kill only pathogenic micro-organisms, not all micro-organisms, so it is important to choose the right disinfectants. The pest control technician first assesses which micro-organism and where he/she is going to eradicate, what the level of contamination is, what method and tools he/she can use to tackle the problem and what factors may influence the effectiveness of the disinfectants.
